Alabama voters can receive free photo voter ID cards

Alabama’s mobile voter ID unit will be in Jefferson County Friday to help ensure residents are ready to cast their ballots in the upcoming elections.

Eligible Alabama voters can receive free photo voter ID cards, on Friday, Aug. 11 at Jefferson County Courthouse from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the event, voter registration forms also will be available so people can register to vote and update voter information.

Alabama requires people to present a form of identification with a photo in order to vote. If people do not have a passport, driver’s license or other form of photo ID, Alabama offers free voter ID cards.

To qualify for a free photo voter ID, residents must be registered voters in Alabama at their current address and must come with one piece of identification such as:

  • Expired license
  • Student ID
  • Employee ID
  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Record
  • Medicare or Medicaid Document
  • Military Record
  • Official School Record or Transcript
  • Social Security Administration Document
  • State or Federal Census Record
  • Hospital or Nursing Home Record
  • Certificate of Citizenship

“Occasionally, you find there are some folks that don’t have any of those types of IDs and we don’t want that to be a reason that someone is not allowed to participate in the electoral process,” Alabama Secretary of State Elections Director Jeff Elrod said.

“If they are an eligible citizen to register to vote, we want them to be able to cast a vote in an election, so we provide this free ID so that people can participate in the process.”
