Man found fatally shot inside vehicle in Birmingham alley

Gunfire erupted in an Inglenook alley Monday night, leaving one man dead.

Birmingham’s East Precinct officers were dispatched just after 8 p.m. to the 5000 block of 41st Way North on a report of shots heard.

Police entered an alley and found a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald. Officers then discovered an adult male wounded inside the vehicle.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the victim dead on the scene.

“We received a few calls,’’ Fitzgerald said, “and we’re thankful for that because it led us right to the victim.”

The alley where the victim was found is an area where groups of people hang out.

“It’s not uncommon for someone to be in that alleyway,’’ Fitzgerald said.

“So, we’re asking if anyone was in that area prior to the shots, or after the shots, and they left the scene, we encourage you to call Crime Stoppers, let us know what you saw or heard and you can remain anonymous and receive cash for your tip,” he said.

No arrests have been made.

The homicide is Birmingham’s 82nd this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency, and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 114 homicides, including the 82 in Birmingham.
