Father among 3 charged with murder in ‘forced ingestion’ drug overdose death of Walker County 26-year-old

Three people have been indicted in the drug overdose death of a 26-year-old Jasper man, including his own father.

Landon Tyler Rader died at a Laura Drive home on March 27. Those charged in his death are Jamie Landon Rader, 48, Ryan Dustin Clark, 24, and Tonya Keene, 43.

A Walker County grand jury issued the three-county indictment against the trio on July 25 on charges of felony murder, manslaughter and unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

Jamie Rader and Keene were booked into the Walker County Jail on Friday. Clark was arrested on Sunday.

All three remain held on bonds totaling $250,000.

Jamie Rader was the victims father. Authorities said the other two suspects were neighbors.

The indictment alleges the trio provided and/or encouraged the ingestion of controlled substances, failed to seek medical attention at the first signs of distress and furnished the methamphetamine and/or amphetamine and/or Hydrocodone that led Landon Rader’s death.

“It is monumental to Walker County as it’s the first time murder charges have been brought because of a drug overdose,’’ said Sheriff Nick Smith.

Deputies responded to the overdose in the Thach community that Monday and noticed something didn’t look right, said Capt. Darrell Mote. An investigation was immediately launched.

The sheriff said Landon Rader’s death resulted from a “forced ingestion.”

“I hope this sends a message to the citizens of Walker County and surrounding that if you sell, furnish or give away a controlled substance that causes the death of another human being that you can be held liable,’’ Smith said.

“What makes this one more significant than a regular overdose is that this was a forced ingestion,’’ he said. “This was not just an individual who voluntarily took a controlled substance.”
