Nigerian University of Alabama student, 18, drowns after jumping off Tuscaloosa lake cliff

A University of Alabama student died over the weekend after jumping off a cliff at a Tuscaloosa lake.

Authorities on Monday identified the drowning victim as Ifeanyi Chidubem Prince Anyoku. He was 18 and from Post Harcourt, Nigeria.

Tuscaloosa police, Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue and the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched about 5 p.m. Friday to an area of Lake Nicol known as The Cliffs.

A group of friends said the teen jumped in the water and did not resurface.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said multiple witnesses told investigators that Anyoku had jumped feet first from the cliffs into the water.

The teen’s body was recovered about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Kennedy said no foul play is suspected and Anyoku’s death appears to be accidental.

Anyoku had at least two times been named to the academic honors President’s List at UA.
