Former Alabama lineman gets another NFL opportunity

Defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand will try to restart his injury-affected career with the Miami Dolphins. The NFL team announced on Sunday that it had signed the former Alabama standout while releasing defensive tackle Anthony Montalvo.

A fourth-round draft choice from the Crimson Tide in 2018, Hand made the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie team for the 2018 NFL season, when he played in 13 of the Detroit Lions’ 16 games.

Since then, Hand has played in 18 of 66 regular-season games. He’s been placed on injured reserve six times in his five NFL seasons.

In 2022, Hand had played two snaps in the opening game for the Tennessee Titans when he left the field with a torn quadriceps muscle and missed the remainder of the season.

Hand had been an unrestricted free agent since March 15.

The Dolphins have former Alabama standout Raekwon Davis, Christian Wilkins and Emmanuel Ogbah ready to start on their defensive line in 2023. But Miami is looking for the right depth pieces for new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s scheme.
