Huntsville council approves $7.9 million contract for final phase of MidCity’s Apollo Park

The ability for Huntsville residents to go kayaking or canoeing not far from where they are entertained by their favorite musical acts at the Orion Amphitheater is a little closer to reality.

The Huntsville City Council has approved a $7.9 million contract with Lambert Contracting to complete the final phase of Apollo Park at MidCity, the city announced on its website.

The 20-acre park will feature two lagoons suitable for canoeing and kayaking. It will also feature walking paths, open green space, trees and landscaping. The city said the park will have a feel similar to Big Spring Park when the work is completed next year.

The park will also feature a fitness court as the result of a partnership with Arts Huntsville and the National Fitness Campaign. The court will feature original artwork from world renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

“This park represents the city’s commitment to offer recreational options for our residents in every part of Huntsville,” Mayor Tommy Battle said in the announcement. “We look forward to its completion and delivering this beautiful recreation space to the community.”
