Suspect wanted in Atmore murder now in custody: Police
The suspect wanted for the murder of a 22-year-old Atmore man is now in custody, according to Atmore police.
Antonio LeMarcus Pettaway II was taken into custody Thursday and remains in the Escambia County Jail, charged with 1st-degree murder.
On July 25, Atmore police were called to the area of Brooks Lane and King Street on a report of a vehicle crash. When they arrived, however, they found Jatyrain Aquamini Tolbert inside his vehicle, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Tolbert was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Area residents told investigators they heard gunshots just prior to the vehicle crash.
Further investigation led to Pettaway as the prime suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to the Escambia County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
Pettaway was already out of jail on $3,000 bond after being charged with bringing a firearm onto the campus of Williamson High School in Mobile last September. That bond will likely be revoked and he will remain in jail as he awaits trial.
