Barrage of gunfire in Birmingham neighborhood leaves 1 man dead, 2 others injured

A barrage of gunfire rang out in a Birmingham neighborhood Friday night, leaving one person dead and two others injured in the city’s first homicide in nearly two weeks.

South Precinct officers were dispatched just before 7 p.m. to the 400 block of Goldwire Street on a report of a person shot. Once police arrived, they found multiple shell casings and blood on Fourth Avenue S.W., just off Goldwire.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officer learned three men had been shot and taken by private vehicle to UAB Hospital.

One of the victims was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. A second victim sustained life-threatening injuries and the third victim’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

About the same time, police received a call of a person shot in the 500 block of Sixth Avenue South, but Fitzgerald said they don’t believe that shooting is linked to the triple shooting.

Investigators believe the three victims were standing around on Fourth Avenue S.W. visiting when someone approached them and opened fired.

Fitzgerald said it wasn’t immediately clear whether the shooter was on foot or a vehicle.

Shot Spotter registered several incidents of gunfire at the location, including one burst of 29 rounds fired.

No arrests have been made.

The deadly shooting is the first in the city since July 23.

“We’ve gone almost two weeks with no homicide,’’ Fitzgerald said, “and here we are today with multiple people shot.”
