Florida woman killed in North Alabama 2-car crash

A Monticello, Fla. woman died following a two-vehicle crash Thursday, according to Alabama Troopers.

Cpl. Reginal King of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said the incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 72 near the 1 mile marker, about seven miles west of Cherokee in Colbert County.

Sandra A. Herrera, 43, was critically injured when the 2013 Ford Fiesta she was driving struck a 2014 Mack tractor-trailer, driven by Blake E. Shelton, 24, of Ripley, Miss.

Herrera was airlifted to Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield and subsequently transported to Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville. She later died of her injuries.

Shelton was injured and transported to Helen Keller Hospital for treatment. David R. Owen, 43, of Selmer, Tenn., a passenger in the Ford, was also injured and airlifted to Northeast Medical Center in Tupelo, Miss.

Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
