Matthew McConaughey movie wraps production in Alabama

“The Rivals of Amziah King,” an upcoming independent film starring Matthew McConaughey, has wrapped production in Alabama.

The movie, written and directed by Andrew Patterson (”The Vast of Night”), began filming in mid-June and has now finished their shoot in the state, according to Goleman Casting.

“THAT IS A WRAP ON THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING, in Birmingham (and many other towns), Alabama!” the company announced in a Facebook post Thursday.

“Two months ago, this movie started filming and it was an amazing journey to get to the end!” the post continued. “In all total, 528 of you came to set, and every one of you gave us your time and your efforts and we appreciate each of you and what you brought to this film!”

Principal photography was set to begin on June 12, according to Jessica Moody (director of programs and operations for Film Birmingham and Create Birmingham) and Facebook notices from Goleman Casting, but filming started a few days early.

Throughout the summer, Goleman Casting frequently announced when the production was seeking background actors and extras for a wide variety of roles, which ranged in age from children to seniors, and included truck drivers, nurses, jail guards, church attendees, elementary school pupils and more.

The Oscar-winner and star of popular films like “Dallas Buyers Club” and “Dazed & Confused” (playing the titular Amziah King in the new film) would pop up in various Alabama locations, either doing his job on set or enjoying a private meal where fans spotted him and even took an occasional photo with him.

The “A Time to Kill” and “Magic Mike” star was first seen filming at J&J Grocery and Deli in Bessemer and then eating a meal at Frothy Monkey in downtown Birmingham early in the production.

He appeared in Pell City, where he filmed at a well-known steakhouse and was filmed throwing up the “Hook ‘em Horns’ hand signal in honor of his beloved Texas Longhorns. The actor raised a ruckus in Walker County as fans flocked to Frosty Mug in Jasper, with many earning a newfound respect for the hard-working actor as he traversed the state to complete the indie film.

The actor even made time to visit patients at Children’s of Alabama, a pediatric hospital in Birmingham, during his stint here. “Our sincere thanks to Matthew McConaughey for bringing smiles to our patients at Children’s of Alabama,” the hospital said on social media, posting photos of the actor’s visit on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

McConaughey made a strong impression with the Alabamians he bumped into at local restaurants or those who staked out in and around sets that weren’t blocked off by local law enforcement. Fans have described their brushes with fame as extremely positive ones, as the “Interstellar” actor has greeted the public in a relaxed and congenial way. “He could not have been more low-key and nice,” said Denise Grubbs Harrill, who shook McConaughey’s hand and chatted with him as the actor sat in his car between scenes on July 5 at Automotive Friction Material. “He just seems like a good ol’ Texas boy.”

This film wasn’t McConaughey’s first visit to Alabama. He previously filmed scenes for 2006′s “Failure to Launch” in Cherokee and Etowah counties, according to a 2005 report by The Gadsden Times. The actor went rock climbing at Cherokee Rock Village in Leesburg and filmed a mountain-biking scene on a nearby ridge, a producer for the movie said. McConaughey also was spotted in Mobile in February 2015, around the time he filmed “Free State of Jones” in Louisiana.

The scene involving Kurt Russell was being shot for “The Rivals of Amziah King," a movie starring Matthew McConaughey.

Also seen in different corners of central Alabama was fellow A-list actor Kurt Russell, who has a supporting role in “Amziah King.” Fans may have seen the “Escape from New York” and “Miracle” star whipping a truck down a dirt road in Marshall County while filming a car chase. “He was grinning like a possum one time, when he come down through there driving,” said Marshall County Commissioner Lee Sims. “He was sliding the truck sideways and everything, on that dirt road. He was having a time.”

Sims and his cousin, Marshall County Sheriff Phil C. Sims, both took to Facebook with the story of their meeting with Russell. “The movie scene hit Marshall County today and I was able to meet Actor Kurt Russell. He was in Marshall County today filming a scene for an upcoming movie with a film crew,” Sheriff Sims wrote. “I was able to get a photo op with him and he was a genuine guy and very nice to speak with. They filmed in good ole Sims Community today.”

Russell was spotted in Jefferson County the next day driving pickup truck on Birmingport Road, Mulga Loop Road and other normally quiet streets of Mulga, which thrilled the locals. We then learned Russell wrapped his part in late July when a fan spotted him napping on a flight out of Birmingham. Klaudia Brady, a resident of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, shared details of her encounter with Russell, including his reaction to an unexpected career reference, on Facebook.

“The flight was almost two hours and we were like an hour into the flight, and I looked to the left,” said Brady, a resident of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. “He’s sleeping and I’m like, what the hell, is that Kurt Russell?”

While the film is actually set in Oklahoma, locations in and around Birmingham have been used filming during a seven-week period in June and July. McConaughey was announced as the star of “The Rivals of Amziah King” on May 8 by Black Bear Pictures, an independent studio based in California and London. Reports at the time described the movie as a “deeply atmospheric, character-focused crime thriller set against the unique backdrop of remote Oklahoma.”

“The Rivals of Amziah King” managed to remain in production despite the writers’ and actors’ strikes that have halted some Hollywood productions and press tours. Variety reported that SAG-AFTRA granted approval to 39 independent productions to shoot during its strike, after confirming that they are not tied to AMPTP companies, including “Amziah King.”

From their website: SAG-AFTRA represents approximately 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers, news editors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists and other media professionals.

The AMPTP is the entertainment industry’s official collective bargaining representative, negotiating 58 industry-wide collective bargaining agreements on behalf of hundreds of motion picture and television producers.
