Two state prison inmates were killed when they were struck by a vehicle while picking up trash on an Alabama roadway.

The Alabama Department of Corrections identified the inmates as Ronnie Steven Cornelius, 30, and Colt Eugene Morris, 40.

Cornelius and Morris both were inmates at Hamilton Community-Based Facility. They were working on an Alabama Department of Transportation road crew on Highway 278 in Marion County when they were struck, said ADOC spokeswoman Kelly Betts.

The facility had an 11-man crew picking up trash. Both inmates were wearing reflective vests and safety policies were being followed when the crash occurred.

Details of the crash have not been released.

Betts said the Law Enforcement Services Division of ADOC was notified, and the inmates’ emergency contacts were also notified.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the deadly crash.

Cornelius was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery out of Colbert County. Morris was serving a 30-year sentence for theft of property out of Escambia County
