How many kids would it take to tackle Derrick Henry?

On the one hand, Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry is a tackle-breaking monster with a lethal stiff-arm on the NFL field.

On the other hand, he’s a favorite with kid football fans and a philanthropist with children’s charities at the forefront of his work.

On Monday at the Titans’ training camp, Henry ran sprints with his daughter and signed autographs for a gaggle of youngsters, many wearing Henry’s No. 22 Titans jersey.

That may have led to a hypothetical question at coach Mike Vrabel’s Monday press conference: How many 5-year-olds would it take to tackle Derrick Henry?

A (expletive) ton,” was Vrabel’s reaction.

But then the coach got serious about the question that came after Tennessee’s first practice in pads of training camp.

“I don’t even know if they could,” Vrabel said. “How many kids would die in the process, I would imagine. I don’t know. Do I need to give you a number? Like a legitimate number? What’s the area? Is it a confined space? Let’s say he’s got a 10-yard-wide space, it would probably take 35. You want to try it? Test it out?”

Vrabel said he would set it up as long as the reporter who asked the question was one of the 5-year-olds trying to tackle Henry.

The 2015 Heisman Trophy winner for an Alabama CFP national championship team, Henry is preparing for his eighth NFL season.

In 2019 and 2020, Henry led the NFL in rushing yards, becoming the eighth player with 2,000 in a season in 2020.

An injury that caused him to miss nine games in 2021 might have cost Henry a third straight rushing crown. He finished ninth in the league despite missing more than half the season.

Last season, Henry ran for 1,538 yards to finish second in rushing to Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, who also played for the Crimson Tide.

The Titans are working toward their 2023 season-opener against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 10.

Before that, Tennessee has preseason games against the Chicago Bears on Aug. 12, Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 19 and New England Patriots on Aug. 25.
