“The crowd seemed inclined to meet Seinfeld more than halfway, relishing his material about the quirks of coffee shops, our reliance on cell phones, the architecture of public bathrooms and the miraculous advent of Pop-Tarts,” AL.com’s Mary Colurso wrote about the performance 10 years ago. “As Seinfeld made his first appearance here in five years, his stand-up strengths — pinpoint timing, a nimble use of language, the ability to make us see the world in a specific way — were much on display.” Read the full review.
He also performed at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville in 2015.
Seinfeld’s standup career skyrocketed after his first appearance on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” in 1981, becoming a bonafide superstar behind the microphone, which led to his team-up with Larry David to create the NBC sitcom “Seinfeld” (streaming on Netflix) The show ran on NBC for nine seasons, winning numerous Emmys, Golden Globes and other awards. It’s widely considered one of the great television series, let alone comedies, of all time.
Seinfeld has remained busy since “Seinfeld” ended its run in 1998, constantly performing standup (always updating his material) and forging ahead with new projects like the film “Bee Movie” and the Emmy-nominated interview series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” (streaming on Netflix) featuring a litany of A-list comics and celebrities like Chris Rock, Jerry Lewis, Don Rickles, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Howard Stern and Sarah Silverman.
Seinfeld’s latest non-standup project is writing, directing and starring in the new film “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story,” a comedy about the invention of the famed breakfast pastry. It also stars Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer and Hugh Grant. Netflix has not announced a release date.
