Reliever David Robertson on the move in MLB trade
David Robertson was part of the New York Mets’ offseason spending spree, intended to lift a 101-win team from wild-card loser to World Series participant.
But if Robertson is going to the World Series this season (as he did in 2022 with the Philadelphia Phillies), it will be as a member of the Miami Marlins.
After defeating the Washington Nationals 2-1 on Thursday night, the Mets had a 48-54 record and became sellers with Major League Baseball’s trade deadline approaching on Tuesday.
On Thursday night, the Marlins announced they had acquired Robertson for their bullpen in exchange for two minor-leaguers.
“He’s an amazing teammate,” Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said on Thursday night in the New York clubhouse. “The team he’s going to, I believe the Marlins, they’re going to get an amazing player and even better person. Just like I told him, I said, ‘You’re a true professional. But what I respect you for the most is you’re an amazing dad.’ His son was here every single day. He’s an amazing teammate, so I’m definitely going to miss him. We’re definitely going to miss him around here, for sure.”
A prep standout at Paul Bryant High School in Cottondale before playing at Alabama, Robertson leads the Mets with 14 saves this season. The 38-year-old right-hander has a 4-2 record and 2.05 earned-run average in 40 relief appearances. In 44 innings, Robertson has allowed 31 hits and 13 walks while striking out 48.
The Marlins have a 55-48 record, which puts Miami 10.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. But the Marlins are one-half game out of a wild-card spot in the National League playoffs.
A.J. Puk leads Miami with 15 saves this season. But he has a 4.45 ERA and suffered his fifth blown save of the season in his most recent outing on Sunday in a 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies. His most recent save came on July 8.
Robertson has three blown saves this season.
Robertson is in his 15th MLB season. In 771 games, he has a 61-38 record with a 2.84 ERA and 171 saves. In 783.1 innings, Robertson has struck out 1,025.
Robertson has rebounded after an arm injury kept him from pitching in the big leagues between April 14, 2019, to Sept. 1, 2021.
Robertson won a World Series ring with the New York Yankees in 2009. He has a 6-0 record and 2.78 ERA in the postseason, including four scoreless appearances for the Phillies in their six-game World Series loss to the Houston Astros last season.
The Marlins are hoping lightning strikes twice with Robertson. Last year, the Cubs traded Robertson during the season to Philadelphia.
