Alabama prison sergeant, 2 inmates charged with murder of inmate
A state inmate died Wednesday at an Alabama prison, and a corrections officer and two fellow inmate are charged with murder.
The Alabama Department of Corrections on Thursday announced the murder charges against ADOC Sgt. Demarcus Sanders, and inmates Fredrick Gooden, 60, and Stefranio Hampton, 35.
They are charged in the slaying of 38-year-old inmate Rubyn James Murray.
Authorities said Sanders, 31, resigned following his arrest.
Murray, said ADOC spokeswoman Kelly Betts, was involved Wednesday in an incident outside his Elmore Correctional Facility dorm with correctional officers resulting in a physical altercation with Sgt. Sanders.
Both Sanders and Murray sustained minor injuries.
Once the incident was under control, Murray was taken to the back gate holding area to be transported to the Staton Health Care Unit for medical assessment and treatment.
Before the transport could occur and in violation of ADOC policy, two other inmates gained access to the holding area, Betts said.
Murray was found unresponsive and was transported to SHCU and then to an area hospital for emergency treatment. Medical workers were unable to resuscitate inmate Murray and he was pronounced at the hospital.
Betts said the cause of death for inmate Murray is pending an autopsy and the conclusion of the investigation.
Sanders was booked into the Elmore County Detention Facility at 6:52 a.m. Thursday. He remains held without bond.
Inmates Gooden and Hampton remain in ADOC custody.
Betts said Further charges and personnel actions are pending.
Murray was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery out of Montgomery County.
Gooden, 60, is serving a 30-year sentence for theft of property out of Jefferson County.
Hampton is serving a life sentence for robbery out of Montgomery County.
Betts said ADOC has already reached out to the Federal Bureau of Investigation — Mobile Field Office and the Elmore County District Attorney’s Office regarding the incident.
