26 rounds fired in Birmingham shootout that left 3 wounded
A shootout in north Birmingham Wednesday evening ended with three people wounded.
North Precinct officers were dispatched at 5:50 p.m. to a report of a person shot in the 200 block of Graymont Avenue West. That location is a Birmingham fire station, and the victim had been taken there by private vehicle, said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.
The victim – an adult female – was taken by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital. Her injuries are life-threatening.
While officers were at the hospital, Wade said, two more victims showed up with gunshots wounds. They had been driven there by private vehicle.
The severity of those two victims wasn’t immediately known.
Wade said the preliminary investigation indicates that a large altercation took place in the 600 block of Second Street North. During that altercation, shots were exchanged by those involved.
All three victims were shot at that location – which is in the Smithfield area.
The city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – indicated about 26 rounds fired.
The investigation is ongoing.
