Defrocked Mobile priest reportedly left country with 18-year-old to perform exorcism

The Archdiocese of Mobile announced Wednesday that one of its parish priests had been stripped of his duties after he “abandoned his assignment.”

Fr. Alex Crow had served in the Archdiocese since being ordained in June 2021, most recently as the Parochial Vicar at Corpus Christi Parish.

“Fr. Alex Crow abandoned his assignment in the Archdiocese,” Wednesday’s statement read.

“His behavior is totally unbecoming of a priest. He has been informed by the archbishop that he may no longer exercise ministry as a priest, nor to tell people he is a priest, nor to dress as a priest.”

Additionally, the Archdiocese said they had reported Crow’s actions to the Mobile District Attorney’s Office “due to the circumstances of his departure.”

Tara Zieman, Communications Director for the district attorney’s office, confirmed they had been contacted regarding Crow.

“We are aware of the situation and are awaiting more information,” Zieman said, although it’s not immediately clear what the nature of any investigation of Crow would be.

There has been rampant speculation regarding the 30-year-old Crow, who some believe has traveled to Spain with a recent McGill-Toolen High School graduate, according to a report by Lagniappe.

Crow had also worked at McGill-Toolen and ministered to students there, according to the report. Crow studied demonology and exorcisms and may have traveled with the 18-year-old to Spain to perform an exorcism.

Earlier Wednesday, Corpus Christi pastor Fr. Pat Arensberg posted a statement to Facebook confirming Crow’s departure.

“It is with great sadness that I announce that Fr. Crow has left the Archdiocese and is no longer the Parochial Vicar at Corpus Christi Parish,” Arensberg wrote.

“Please keep Fr. Crow in your prayers. I also ask that you pray for me and for our parish as we adjust to this unexpected change.”

Crow attended Holy Family and St. Dominic Catholic Schools before attending McGill-Toolen from 2007-11, according to St. Ignatius Catholic Parish. Crow then attended Spring Hill College from 2011-12 before leaving school to become a musician.

“I can certainly empathize with those who are estranged from the Catholic Church or from God in general,” Crow said in a 2021 Catholic Week post.

“I also know well the spiritual dangers and intellectual challenges that confront young people, especially while in college. My own journey back to the Church was not easy, but I am grateful for that struggle because it equipped me with the ability to help others find their way back.”
