TVA adds more power generation at north Alabama natural gas plant
TVA brought three additional units online Tuesday at a north Alabama natural gas plant.
The new units at Colbert Combustion Turbine near Tuscumbia began producing electricity for commercial operation months ahead of schedule, and under budget, TVA announced Wednesday. The $500 million projects adds about 750 megawatts of electricity with the new units. A practical translation is those additional megawatts are enough to power about 400,000 homes, according to TVA.

While natural gas is a fossil fuel and TVA is operating toward a goal of eliminating its carbon footprint, the federal utility said that natural gas works in concert with solar energy to provide electricity when the sun does not shine. TVA plans to add about 10,000 megawatts of generation by 2035.
TVA also touted that there “no significant environmental events” during the construction that began in 2021. Over the next decade, TVA said it will build and/or evaluate 7,000 megawatts of new gas generation – enough dispatchable electricity to power over 3.8 million homes.
