Alabama Roots: 3 MLB picks sign million-dollar deals
The first two players from Alabama high schools and colleges selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft signed for the biggest bonuses among the 21 players with state baseball roots chosen earlier this month.
One other selection from an Alabama high school or college signed a million-dollar deal, and Grayson Hitt wasn’t chosen until No. 112 overall on July 10.
The Arizona Diamondbacks picked the Crimson Tide pitcher and shelled out a $1.2 million signing bonus to keep the left-hander from returning to Alabama. That was more than twice the assigned pick value of $597,500.
Hitt struck out 133 in 117.2 innings at Alabama, and Arizona went all in to get him even though an elbow injury sustained during the 2023 season led to Tommy John surgery.
The Chicago White Sox signed LSU pitcher Grant Taylor for $1,659,800 after picking the former Florence High School standout at No. 51 on July 9.
The Tampa Bay Rays signed Mississippi State outfielder Colton Ledbetter for $1,297,500 after picking the former Spain Park High School and Samford standout at No. 55 on July 9.
