Third inmate dies in Mobile Metro Jail in a month
Another inmate has died in Mobile Metro Jail, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, marking the third inmate death at the Mobile jail in the past 30 days.
Inmate William Gerald Appling Jr., 46, was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday by a corrections officer, who called for medical assistance.
Appling was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Appling was taken to the jail’s medical clinic when he arrived July 19 due to injuries suffered in an assault prior to his arrest by the Prichard Police Department, according to the sheriff’s office.
He was moved to a medical recovery cell three days later to further heal from his injuries. He was alone in his cell when the corrections officer found him Tuesday.
Appling was arrested last week by Prichard police on a criminal trespassing charge. Court and jail records show Appling was on parole at the time of the arrest, resulting in a parole violation charge in addition to the trespassing charge.
The jail docket indicated Appling was required to wear an ankle monitor as a condition of his release.
An autopsy and toxicology tests will be performed to determine Appling’s cause of death.
On June 26, the sheriff’s office reported 38-year-old Ernest James Little Jr. was found unresponsive by his cellmates. Corrections officers administered Narcan, an over-the-counter treatment for opioid overdose, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Three weeks later, 30-year-old Terrell Markuise Moultrie was found dead in his cell, with the Mobile County Major Crimes Detectives Unit finding no evidence of foul play or trauma.
No information on autopsy or toxicology results have been released on either of the first two inmate deaths.
