Brian Harman cites Kirby Smart quote as motivation for The Open win

Brian Harman revealed he drew motivation Sunday from Georgia football coach Kirby Smart prior to the start of the final round of The Open.

Harman, a former golfer at Georgia, shot a 1-under 70 on Sunday to win The Open by six strokes.

He said he drew inspiration from a Smart, the former Alabama defensive coordinator.

“I was a wreck last night. I’ve been a wreck the whole week,” Harman said during an interview with The Golf Channel. “I kept thinking about something Kirby Smart said. ‘I’m not gonna be hunted, I’m gonna hunt.’

“I decided to get out and take as much control as I could.”

Smart, who has led Georgia to back-to-back national championships, used the quote last July during SEC media days.

“People ask the question, ‘How does it feel to be hunted?’ We will not be hunted at the University of Georgia. I can promise you that,” Smart said last July. “The huntin’ that we do will be done from us in the other direction. It’s not something that we’re going to sit back and be passive about.

“People say, do you have the talent? Do you have enough talent within your program? We’ve got plenty of talent. What we lack right now is experience.”

Harman’s win was never in doubt. The 36-year-old American captured the British Open at Royal Liverpool as he started the day with a five-shot lead, and no one ever got closer than three on a rainy Sunday in England. Harman led the final 51 holes of this British Open.

The one time it got tight on the front nine he made consecutive birdies. The rest of the day was a soggy walk on the links. Harman won for only the third time in his career. He had gone 167 tournaments since his last PGA Tour title.
