Jason Brooks, Bryan Hill no longer with South Alabama
South Alabama has released its preseason football roster for 2023, and there a number of notable additions and subtractions.
Two scholarship players with Mobile ties are no longer with the team. Running back Bryan Hill and defensive back Jason Brooks have left the Jaguars in search of more playing time elsewhere, head coach Kane Wommack confirmed to AL.com.
Hill — who would have been a fifth-year senior this fall — rushed for 332 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games in 2021, but did not have a carry in four games in 2022. A graduate of McGill-Toolen Catholic School, he transferred to South Alabama from Tuskegee in 2021.
Brooks signed with South Alabama in 2021 out of Mobile Christian School and would have been a redshirt sophomore this season. He totaled one tackle in four games in 2022.
In addition, several newcomers have been officially added to the South Alabama roster. That includes freshman punter Aleksi Pulkkinen of Finland, junior-college transfer defensive back Brian Dillard and defensive end RJ Moss, a highly-rated 2022 Jaguars signee who did not qualify academically last season.
Also officially on the roster are eight Division I transfers who committed to South Alabama over the summer: quarterback Bishop Davenport (Utah State), offensive lineman Lucas Taylor (Mississippi State), linebacker Gavin Forsha (Kansas State), defensive backs Jamarrien Burt (Oklahoma), Jordan Buchanan (Purdue), Wesley Miller (Mississippi State) and Mike Harris (Baylor) and punter David Delgado (San Diego State). Defensive back La’Dareyen Craig, a Baker High School graduate who signed with South Alabama in February and was expected to graduate from junior college in May, is not listed on the roster.
South Alabama, which went 10-3 last season, opens up 2023 at Tulane on Sept. 2.
