Birmingham father charged after 3-year-old son finds his gun, fatally shoots himself
A Birmingham man has been charged after his son found a gun and fatally shot himself last month.
Stephen D’Mitri Goldman, 23, is charged with reckless manslaughter in the June 30 death of 3-year-old Kayden Goldman, according to court records made public Thursday.
Charging documents against Goldman said he recklessly caused the death of Kayden “by leaving a loaded firearm within the reach and sight of an unattended toddler.”
Goldman was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Tuesday and released the same day after posting $15,000 bond.
Birmingham 911 received call at 12:55 a.m. that Friday reporting that a child had been shot. The location was an apartment in the 2600 block of Tempest Drive S.W.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported Kayden to Children’s of Alabama where he was pronounced dead at 1:55 a.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the child was in the care of an adult and was in a room by himself. It appears he got a hold of a gun and accidentally shot himself.
Kayden’s mother, Adreanna Jones, described Kayden as smart and intelligent.
“He loved the idea that when he was old enough that he wanted to play soccer,’’ she said. “He liked going to the park and had a crazy obsession for dinosaurs.”
Jones previously told AL.com Kayden was a great big brother to his sister, Kaylee, and an excellent son. He loved fruits and vegetables, and he loved to dance.
“My baby was so independent, and he knew exactly what he wanted,’’ Jones said. “He was a good child. No, he was an excellent child. To know him is to love him.”
“He was a happy, intelligent, lovable, and sweet child,’’ according to his obituary. “Kayden made sure everyone knew their ABC’s, numbers, colors, and site words. He had a love for reading and snacks.”
