Recruiting update: Class 5A championship MVP Ramsay running back stays in state, more

Ramsay running back Ashton Ashford recently announced that he has committed to North Alabama.

The Class 5A MVP of last season’s state championship game, Ashford was selected first team all-state after running for 1,881 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2022.

Ashford led the Rams in the 41-20 victory over Charles Henderson, running 44 times for 281 yards and five touchdowns at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium. He had all 26 of his team’s rush attempts in the first half and finished with all but four in the game.

The 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior also had offers from Marshall, Alabama State, Alabama A&M and others.

In other recruiting news:

Moody’s Blaine Burke chose Arkansas State. The 5-8, 170-pound 3-star senior RB/ATH also had offers from West Virginia, Minnesota, Louisville, UAB, East Carolina and more. Burke ran for 1,605 yards last season with 20 touchdowns.

Miles Adams, a 6-5, 260-pound senior lineman from Flomaton, committed to Southern Miss. The 3-star prospect chose the Golden Eagles over Texas Tech, UAB, Liberty, Troy and others.

McAdory 4-star tight end JaCorey Whitted narrowed his impressive list to six schools. The 6-7, 220-pound senior named Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Arkansas State as the top teams vying for his signature.

Whitted also had offers from Florida, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Wisconsin, UAB and more.

Brookwood offensive lineman William Sanders plans to announce his decision on Friday at 3 p.m. The 6-4, 295-pound 4-star senior narrowed more than 20 offers to Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State.

BASKETBALL

Huntsville High’s Simon Walker announced an offer from St. John’s. The 6-5 Class of 2025 shooting guard also has offers from Marshall, Furman, Lipscomb, Jacksonville State and Alabama A&M.

Freshman girls basketball player Jayla Forbes of Thompson added two more offers to go along with an earlier Mississippi state offer. The 6-7 post player announced offers from both Auburn and Ole Miss.
