Alabama Department of Education employee charged with sexual abuse of child

A government relations employee with the Alabama Department of Education has been charged with sexual abuse of a child less than 12, according to court records.

Cole Wagner, 32, of Montgomery, was arrested Wednesday on the charge. He was arrested by the Montgomery County sheriff’s department, according to the warrant. His bond was set at $60,000.

A Montgomery County grand jury indicted Wagner on June 30. The indictment says Wagner subjected another person less than 12 to sexual contact. The charge is a Class B felony, which can carry a sentence of two years to 20 years in prison.

Efforts to contact Wagner were not immediately successful.

Superintendent of Education Eric Mackey released a statement about Wagner’s arrest.

“The allegations against Mr. Wagner are serious, tragic and shocking,” Mackey said. “While he was employed by our department for only a few months, Mr. Wagner has been terminated effective immediately. No further information is available at this time as the investigation is ongoing.”

Government relations employees for state agencies generally serve as a liaisons between the agency and the Legislature.
