Why the 2023 Alabama season will be like a ‘new job’ for Nick Saban

When Nick Saban reflects on a season, he pays more attention to the losses than the wins.

Alabama’s football coach commented on how he handles the yearly turnover on Wednesday during SEC Media Days and in doing so, Saban partially revealed how he plans to tackle the 2023 season with plenty of new faces in Tuscaloosa.

“Every season is a new challenge. It’s like you took a new job. You have returning players that need to develop new roles on the team, whether it’s leadership or play a new position,” Saban said in the Nashville Grand Hyatt. “… And you have a lot of young players who are coming in that you need to develop to help them be able to play at a certain level so that you can accomplish some of the goals and aspirations that the team has for themselves in terms of what they want to accomplish, individually and collectively.

“It’s always about the future. Most of the things that I remember about the past are the games we didn’t win, the National Championship games that we lost, the games that we lost a year ago on the last play of the game, and how that impacted our chances to have a successful season.”

Regarding new players, Saban got the big question out of the way during his opening statement. Through a baking analogy, he said there is “no timetable” to name a starting quarterback. He did say that he believes the offensive supporting cast is “improved” from the one Bryce Young had a year ago.

The receivers are older, the young offensive line has developed and tight end CJ Dippre should stabilize the tight end room. Yet, the first question Saban took from the media reminded him of the reality the Tide face this fall: it’ll need to replace at least 10 starters, including Young and top skill player Jahmyr Gibbs.

“Well, I think experience matters, I really do, but I also think that when you have young players who are hungry and have great energy and enthusiasm, that’s helpful to the team chemistry as well,” Saban said. ” … So their development is critical to us having a successful team, and we do have some good, young players. I think the challenge is for us as coaches to be able to help those guys develop to where they can play winning football.”

Saban said he stresses to his coordinators the importance of developing young players through the season. But in another wrinkle to the 2023 campaign, Alabama will have a new set of offensive and defensive coordinators for the fifth time since Saban was hired in 2007.

Tommy Rees, Kevin Steele and inside linebackers coach Robert Bala are among the new additions to the staff. Multiple freshmen have an opportunity to contribute this fall, namely running back Justice Haynes who starred during spring practice.
