SEC Football by the Numbers: Top 10 from Week 8

During the eighth week of the SEC’s 2022 season, Alabama defeated Mississippi State 30-6, LSU defeated Ole Miss 45-20, Missouri defeated Vanderbilt 17-14 and South Carolina defeated Texas A&M 30-24 in conference games and Tennessee defeated UT Martin 65-24 in a non-conference contest. Here are 10 numbers about the SEC’s Week 8 games:

3 SEC victories for LSU this season have featured the Tigers coming back from double-digits deficits, including Saturday’s 45-20 win over Ole Miss. The Tigers trailed the Rebels 17-3 in the second quarter. LSU outscored Ole Miss 28-0 in the second half, when the Tigers had a 238-112 yardage advantage and limited the Rebels to one third-down conversion. On Sept. 17, LSU trailed Mississippi State 13-0 before posting a 31-16 victory. On Oct 1, LSU trailed Auburn 17-0 before taking a 21-17 win. This is the first season that LSU has overcome deficits of 10-or-more points to win three times since 2007, when the Tigers overtook Florida, Auburn and Alabama on their way to the BCS national championship.

3 TD runs in each of the past two games for LSU QB Jayden Daniels. In a 45-35 victory over Florida on Oct. 15 and a 45-20 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday, Daniels became the third LSU player with back-to-back games with three rushing TDs this century. Leonard Fournette did it against Mississippi State and Auburn in 2015, and Labrandon Toefield had three TD runs against Tulane and Utah State in 2001. With nine rushing TDs this season, Daniels has surpassed the LSU QB record of six set by David Woodley in 1979 and equaled by four others. With 121 rushing yards against Ole Miss, Daniels also broke the LSU QB single-season rushing record by pushing his 2022 total to 524. Jordan Jefferson had set the school QB mark with 450 rushing yards in 2010.

5 Tackles for loss for Vanderbilt’s Jaylen Mahoney in the Commodores’ 17-14 loss to Missouri on Saturday. Mahoney became the fourth NCAA FBS player to reach five tackles for loss in a game this season, including Ole Miss’ Khari Coleman in a 28-10 victory over Troy on Sept. 3. Mahoney tied the Vanderbilt single-game record established by Stephen Weatherly in a 24-17 loss to Tennessee on Nov. 29, 2014. Mahoney became the ninth SEC player this century with at least five tackles for loss in a game. The five who did so between Weatherly and Mahoney played in victories.

5 Victories in six games for LSU when playing an undefeated, top-10 Ole Miss team in Tiger Stadium, including Saturday’s 45-20 win over the No. 7 Rebels on Saturday. In 1958, No. 1 LSU defeated No. 6 Ole Miss 14-0. In 1959, No. 1 LSU defeated No. 3 Ole Miss 7-3. In 1961, No. 6 LSU defeated No. 2 Ole Miss 10-7. In 2014, No. 24 LSU defeated No. 3 Ole Miss 10-7. In 1962, No. 6 Ole Miss defeated No. 4 LSU 15-7 in Baton Rouge. Saturday’s victory was LSU’s first in 11 games against Ole Miss in which the Tigers were unranked and the Rebels were ranked.

19 Consecutive Tennessee games have featured at least one TD pass by QB Hendon Hooker, the longest streak in school history. Hooker completed 18-of-24 passes for 276 yards with three TDs and no interceptions in a 65-24 victory over UT Martin on Saturday to surpass Heath Shuler’s 18-game streak that started in the 1992 season and ended in the 1994 campaign. In the past 10 games, Hooker has thrown at least two TD passes in each. In the only game he’s played at Tennessee without a TD pass, Hooker threw only once.

38 Consecutive home games have been won in October by Alabama, which extended the winning streak for another season by beating Mississippi State 30-6 on Saturday in its final October game of 2022. The Crimson Tide hasn’t been beaten at Bryant-Denny Stadium in the 10th month since South Carolina took a 20-3 victory on Oct. 2, 2004.

52 Points were scored by Tennessee in the first half of its 65-24 victory over UT Martin on Saturday – the most in one half for the Volunteers in the SEC era. On Nov. 9, 1929, Tennessee scored 53 points in the first half of a 73-0 victory over Carson-Newman. The SEC played its first football season in 1933. The Vols posted their highest point output since a 70-3 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 23, 2000. Tennessee became the 29th SEC team to score 60 or more points in at least two games in the same season. The Vols beat Akron 63-6 on Sept. 17. Only two SEC teams have reached 60 points in three games in one season – South Carolina in 1995 and LSU in 2019. Against UT Martin, Tennessee piled up 696 yards of offense, the second-most in one game in school history, trailing the 718 in a 55-48 victory over Troy on Nov. 3, 2012.

100 Yards on a kickoff return by South Carolina’s Xavier Legette to open the Gamecocks’ 30-24 victory over Texas A&M on Saturday. The fourth 100-yard kickoff return in South Carolina history helped the Gamecocks grab a 17-0 lead. Texas A&M’s first possession ended with an interception by Darius Rush, who returned it 59 yards to the Aggies’ 5-yard line to set up a field goal, and the second ended in a fumble, which Tonka Hemingway ran back to the Aggies 19 to set up a TD, as the Gamecocks, who had scored 21 first-quarter points this season, went up by 17 points 5:09 into the game. South Carolina went on to its first victory in nine games against Texas A&M. Under coach Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M has a 26-0 record when leading at the end of the first quarter and an 11-18 record when the Aggies are not leading at the end of the first quarter. Texas A&M has scored only 17 points in the first quarter this season.

240 Minutes, 15 seconds of clock time and 2,897 calendar days between touchdowns at Bryant-Denny Stadium for Mississippi State. In the Bulldogs’ 25-20 loss to Alabama on Nov. 15, 2014, MSU scored on a 4-yard pass from Dak Prescott to Jameon Lewis with 15 seconds to play. On its next three visits to Tuscaloosa, Mississippi State lost 51-3 in 2016, 24-0 in 2018 and 41-0 in 2020. On Saturday in the Bulldogs’ 30-6 loss to Alabama, MSU scored when RB Jo’quavious Marks reached the end zone on a 1-yard run as time ran out.

1,002 Completions for Mississippi State QB Will Rogers, who became the first SEC player to reach 1,000 completions with a 30-of-60 showing in a 30-6 loss to Alabama on Saturday. Only one NCAA FBS player has reached 1,000 completions in fewer games than Rogers, who played in his 30th MSU game on Saturday. Washington State QB Luke Falk did it in 29 games playing for Mike Leach, who is also Rogers’ coach. SEC quarterbacks have thrown at least 60 passes in 13 games this century, and Rogers accounts for the past four of those.
