Severe storms barreled through north Alabama early Tuesday evening, taking down trees that blocked roads and knocked out several traffic lights in Huntsville.

“Many traffic signals are not functioning and more than 30 downed trees have been reported,” the Huntsville Police Department tweeted. “Officers are directing traffic at intersections across the city. If a traffic signal is out and an officer is not present, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.”

As of 7:07 p.m., about 25,000 Huntsville Utilities customers were without electricity, the company said. Thousands of others did not have power across north Alabama.

In Morgan County, power lines and trees were down, including several block roads. A wreck was also reported on I-65 by Highway 67, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

Torrential rain along with strong winds and pea-sized hail were reported.

The wind took down a portable toilet in Huntsville, while the roof a building was destroyed in Guntersville.
