Detroit Lions sign another draft pick from Alabama

After signing their first-round draft choice from Alabama on Monday, the Detroit Lions announced on Tuesday that they had signed their second-round draft choice from the Crimson Tide.

After making running back Jahmyr Gibbs the 12th selection in the NFL Draft on April 27, the Lions chose defensive back Brian Branch with the draft’s 45th pick on April 28.

Drafted players receive four-year contracts. The values of those contracts are based on draft position, the NFL’s salary cap of $224.8 million for the 2023 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.

While terms were not announced on Tuesday, the values of the contracts can be estimated, which the sports financial website spotrac.com has done. Branch signed a contract with an estimated value of $8.022 million, including a $2.834 million signing bonus.

Gibbs signed for $17.845 million, including a $9.978 million signing bonus. While Gibbs’ contract is fully guaranteed, the amount of money guaranteed for Branch has not been reported.

The two players closest to Branch in the draft who have signed their first NFL contracts are defensive end B.J. Ojulari, picked at No. 41 by the Arizona Cardinals, and defensive tackle Keeanu Benton, picked at No. 49 by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ojulari’s contract guarantees 64 percent of its $8.598 million value, and Benton’s contract guarantees 76 percent of its $7.333 million value.

The Lions traded the 48th and 159th selections in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Green Bay Packers to move up three spots to pick Branch.

Detroit overhauled its secondary this offseason.

The Lions traded cornerback Jeff Okudah, the third player picked in the 2020 NFL Draft, to the Atlanta Falcons. In free agency, safety DeShon Elliott joined the Miami Dolphins and nickel corner Mike Hughes went to Atlanta.

Versatile safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and cornerback Cameron Sutton came aboard in free agency in March to join safety Kerby Joseph, who started 14 games as a rookie in 2022.
