Trump leads in Alabama campaign cash ahead of 2024 race, Biden a distant fourth

So far in the 2024 presidential election cycle, former Pres. Donald Trump is running away with Alabama voters support – and their money.

Based on new campaign finance data from the Federal Election Commission, the 45th president of the United States – recently indicted and facing multiple investigations – is far and away the most popular choice among Alabama donors, racking up 79% of all the inidividual contributions this year.

Trump has always been popular in Alabama – he won the 2016 GOP primary here easily, and the state has backed him every time he’s been on the ballot.

But outside of Trump, who else has Alabama thrown support behind? Which candidate is in second place? It depends on how you look at it.

In terms of total dollars, the candidate in second place in Alabama is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. And he’s followed by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina.

President Joe Biden is trailing all of them so far in Alabama, according to the latest FEC data.

And in terms of the number of individual donations, Scott is second to Trump, followed closely by Nikki Halley, the former governor of South Carolina. DeSantis is fourth in Alabama for the number of separate campaign donations.

But just because a candidate is in second and third place, that doesn’t mean they are nipping at Trump’s heels. In fact, no one is anywhere close.

Trump so far has earned a whopping 65% of all the money contributed by Alabama donors and 80% of all individual contributions.

With more than $381,000 raised, Trump has gained more than six times more money in Alabama than DeSantis’ roughly $62,000.

To get there, Trump received nearly 8,000 individual donations, averaging about $48 each, between November of 2022 and June of 2023, the dates covered by the most recent FEC release. That’s about 52 times more individual donations than DeSantis received during that same time.

And that’s 88 times the number of individuals in Alabama who gave to President Biden. Biden, with nearly $30,000, is one of just three Democrats to report receiving a contribution in Alabama ahead of the 2024 race. Author Marianne Williamson has reported raising just under $3,500 in the state so far. And the controversial Robert Kennedy, Jr., has raised nearly $13,500.

Trump’s fundraising sped up in recent months, even as more GOP candidates jumped into the race. More than half of his campaign cash from Alabama came from April, May and June – after he was indicted. That includes $95,000 in June, the last month for which data was available.
