Hugh Freeze needs new offensive terminology because of schools ‘up the road from us on both sides’

Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze made it clear Tuesday during his time at SEC media days in Nashville that new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery will call plays for the Tigers.

There are a couple of reasons he laid out to the media gathered. However, the familiarity of his terminology appears to be an issue with some of Auburn’s biggest opponents.

“Someone who’s terminology is as simple as mine, I do think I need a new terminology because there are too many people in this league that I went and talked ball with and probably told too much to, particularly up the road from us on both sides,” Freeze said with a smile.

Grab any map and you have a pretty good idea of which schools he was referring to. I’ll give you a hint: They’re Auburn’s two biggest rivals.

It makes sense. As reported by AL.com, citing sources, back in 2018, Alabama was one of at least five SEC schools that had contact with Freeze about on-field jobs. Alabama coach Nick Saban wanted to hire Freeze as a co-offensive coordinator and position coach.

Freeze, though, has complete confidence in Montgomery.

“I have great trust in him, and I’ve been impressed,” he said. “Obviously, it is the same system that we have just melted into his terminology, and I needed that, truthfully.

“I’ve done my terminology, truthfully, since high school.”
