Kirby Smart not thinking about Alabama lessons for Georgia 3-peat attempt

Kirby Smart and Georgia football are coming off back-to-back national championships. It’s the first time a school has pulled that off in the College Football Playoff era.

But it’s not the first time Smart has helped pull off the feat. Back during the dying days of the BCS, he was Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator when Alabama won two titles in a row in 2011 and 2012.

On Tuesday at SEC Media Days, Smart was asked lessons he took from that time that could apply now. According to the coach, he’s more focused on the immediate future than thinking about past accomplishments.

“I can’t even remember that far back, I’ll be honest with you,” Smart said. “I don’t remember that next season or anything that carried over from that (title) season, because you’re not thinking about the last season.”

Smart said the media makes more of an issue of overarching lessons than he does within the locker room.

“All we’re thinking about is the next 24 hours,” he said. “Like, how can we get better the next 24 hours? We’re not, I’m not sitting here thinking of some motivating factor.”

Later on in the day, Smart was asked about the comparison between the program he built at Georgia and Saban’s Alabama.

“I think the two circumstances are very different,” Smart said. “Two different programs led by different people. Lot of respect for Nick and the things I learned from him, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with him as an assistant coach, but what we’re doing right now is based on the players and people and organization we have. Not anything relevant to what we had when I was there.

Smart left no doubt that his team wants another national title. But for the moment, he’d just like to fend off any complacency that could enter his organization.

“I can assure you that if we get to that point , I’m going to be worried about the next day’s work more than I am the achievement,” Smart said.
