Draft picks, NBA hopefuls shine in Summer League

In rookie Kobe Brown’s first game in the NBA 2K24 Summer League in Las Vegas on July 8, the former Lee-Huntsville standout scored 11 points in the Los Angeles Clippers’ 105-99 loss to the Utah Jazz. He made 4-of-11 shots, including 1-of-4 on 3-pointers, and went 2-of-5 at the free-throw line.

In his fourth Summer League game on Friday, Brown scored 35 points in the Clippers’ 102-91 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. He made 13-of-19 shots, including 7-of-10 3-pointers, and went 2-of-2 at the free-throw line.

“It’s definitely way higher now,” Brown said when asked to compare his comfort level on the court from Game 1 to Game 4. “My first game, I was just trying to figure out how the game was played, like the speed and the difference between college, and I feel like I’m settling in well, so I’m trying to keep going, keep striving.”

The 30th selection in the NBA Draft on June 22, Brown joined Los Angeles from Missouri, where his top scoring game featured 31 points.

The three other players with Alabama basketball roots chosen in the 2023 NBA Draft – Alabama’s Noah Clowney and Brandon Miller and Mountain Brooks’ Colby Jones — also played in the NBA Summer League, which concluded on Monday night with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 99-78 victory over the Houston Rockets in the championship game.

The draft picks were among the 20 players from Alabama high schools and colleges who played in the NBA Summer League’s 11-day schedule.

Xavier Moon (Central-Coosa) and Jabari Smith (Auburn) received all-star recognition as selections for the All-Summer League second team – Smith doing so even though he played in only two games.

JD Davison (Calhoun, Alabama) had the best assist average for any player who appeared in at least five games, and Keon Ellis (Alabama) had the best steal average for any player who appeared in at least four games in this year’s NBA Summer League.

The players with Alabama basketball roots in the NBA 2K24 Summer League included:

· San Antonio Spurs center Charles Bediako (Alabama) averaged 5.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in 13.1 minutes in five games. Bediako joined the Spurs as an undrafted rookie.

· New Orleans Pelicans forward Garrison Brooks (Auburn High) averaged 6.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks in 17.6 minutes in five games. Brooks played in the NBA G League last season.

· Los Angeles Clippers forward Kobe Brown (Lee-Huntsville) averaged 15.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocks in 25.4 minutes in five games in his first pro action. Brown joined the Clippers as the 30th pick in the NBA Draft on June 22.

· Brooklyn Nets center Noah Clowney (Alabama) averaged 4.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.4 blocks in 19.4 minutes in five games in his first pro action. Clowney joined the Nets as the 21st pick in the NBA Draft on June 22.

· Cleveland Cavaliers guard Sharife Cooper (Auburn) averaged 13.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 21.5 minutes in four games. A two-year NBA G League veteran with 13 games of NBA experience, Cooper missed the Cavaliers’ final two games because of a groin injury, but he earned a championship ring when Cleveland defeated the Houston Rockets 99-78 on Monday night in the NBA 2K24 Summer League title game.

· Boston Celtics guard JD Davison (Calhoun, Alabama) averaged 9.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.4 steals in 26.3 minutes in five games. Davison played in 12 games as a rookie with the Celtics while also working in the NBA G League last season.

· Chicago Bulls guard Nate Darling (UAB) averaged 11.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 24.7 minutes in five games. Darling played in the NBA G League last season and has seven games of NBA experience.

· Sacramento Kings guard Keon Ellis (Alabama) averaged 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals in 28.0 minutes in four games. Ellis appeared in 16 games with the Kings last season while also playing in the NBA G League.

· Miami Heat forward Ja’Von Franklin (South Alabama/Auburn) averaged 1.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 9.3 minutes in two games. Franklin joined the Heat as an undrafted rookie.

· Cleveland Cavaliers guard Wendell Green (Auburn) averaged 2.0 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 4.6 minutes in four games in his first pro action. Green joined the Cavaliers as an undrafted rookie and received an NBA 2K24 Summer League championship ring after Cleveland defeated the Houston Rockets 99-78 on Monday night in the title game.

· Phoenix Suns center Trey Jemison (Hoover, UAB) averaged 8.0 points and 6.8 rebounds in 23.1 minutes in five games in his first pro action. Jemison joined the Suns as an undrafted rookie.

· Sacramento Kings guard Colby Jones (Mountain Brook) averaged 10.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 27.4 minutes in four games. Jones joined the Kings as the 34th pick in the NBA Draft on June 22.

· Dallas Mavericks forward Braxton Key (Alabama) averaged 8.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in 19.1 minutes in three games. A two-year NBA G League veteran with 14 games of NBA experience, Key was signed by the Denver Nuggets to a two-way contract for the 2023-24 season during the NBA 2K24 Summer League.

· Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller (Alabama) averaged 17.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks in 24.1 minutes in three games. Miller joined the Hornets as the second pick in the NBA Draft on June 22.

· Houston Rockets guard Trhae Mitchell (South Alabama) averaged 1.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 6.5 minutes in three games. Mitchell has played in the NBA G League the past three seasons.

· Los Angeles Clippers guard Xavier Moon (Central-Coosa) averaged 19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.0 blocks in 27.9 minutes in five games. Moon has appeared in 14 games with the Clippers over the past two seasons while playing in the NBA G League.

· Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jaden Shackleford (Alabama) averaged 8.5 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 16.7 minutes in four games. Shackleford played in the NBA G League last season.

· Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith (Auburn) averaged 35.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 blocks in 32.2 minutes in two games. Smith started 79 games for Houston last season after joining the Rockets as the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

· Golden State Warriors guard Craig Sword (Carver-Montgomery) averaged 3.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 9.9 minutes in four games. A five-year NBA G League veteran, Sword has played in three NBA regular-season games.

· Dallas Mavericks guard Jordan Walker (UAB) averaged 13.0 points, 1.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 15.7 minutes in four games in his first pro action. Walker joined the Mavericks as an undrafted rookie.
