Air quality alert for Huntsville, Decatur areas today
An air quality alert will be in effect on Tuesday for Madison and Morgan counties.
That includes both the Huntsville and Decatur metro areas.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management said ground-level ozone or particulate matter levels could reach readings that are unhealthy for sensitive groups. Those include children and those with asthma or other respiratory conditions.
Hot temperatures combined with light winds can allow unhealthy air to stagnate at ground level.
Added to that is haze from wildfires in Canada that has migrated down into Alabama.
Some tips from ADEM for air quality alert days:
* Conserve electricity
* Set your air conditioner at a higher temperature
* Limit driving
* Avoid use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment
* Refuel vehicles after 6 p.m.
* Limit engine idling
More hot weather is in the forecast for the rest of the work week, but a slight cooldown will be possible starting on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
