Region standings: Gulf Shores is 6-1 in Class 5A, Region 1; B.C Rain is 4-3

The skinny: Gulf Shores is locked into the second playoff seed from Region 1. B.C. Rain needs a victory and a Williamson loss to UMS-Wright to keep its playoff hopes alive. … Gulf Shores leads the series with B.C. Rain 6-2. The two teams last played in 2019 with B.C. Rain winning 26-14. … The Dolphins have won 5 straight since their only loss of the season at UMS-Wright on Sept. 9. They are in the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Senior QB Brendon Byrd has completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,369 yards and 11 TDs. He also has rushed for 419 yards and 2 TDs. Junior Ronnie Royal has 813 yards and 18 TDs on 90 carries and also has caught 40 passes for 601 yards and 6 TDs. He has 30 tackles and 2 interceptions on defense. Senior JR Gardner has rushed for 727 yards and 16 TDs on 112 carries. … B.C. Rain has won two straight games over LeFlore and Elberta since losing four of five games midway through the season.

MOUNTAIN BROOK (7-2) AT BAKER (4-5)

Last week: Mountain Brook lost to Gardendale 29-28; Baker defeated Fairhope 42-10

Region standings: Mountain Brook finished 5-1 in Class 6A, Region 5 and is the second seed for the playoffs; Baker finished 4-2 in Class 7A, Region 1 and is the second seed from that region.

The skinny: The Spartans and Hornets have never played. … Mountain Brook has lost two of its last four games (to Hoover and Gardendale) after starting the season 5-0. Chris Yeager’s team has scored 345 points and given up 123. Mountain Brook led Gardendale 28-14 in the second half last week on a pair of Mac Palmer interception returns for a touchdown before the Rockets rallied for the win. Yeager is 140-60 overall in his 17th year at Mountain Brook and 165-80 in 21 years as a head coach. He has led the Spartans to the Class 6A semifinals three times, including 2020 and 2021. … Baker won its way into the playoffs last week with a dominating win at Fairhope. The Hornets went from the outside looking in to the No. 2 seed and a home game. Junior QB Josh Flowers passed for two scores and ran for another in the victory. The Hornet defense intercepted Fairhope QB Caden Creel 3 times and held the Pirates to their lowest point total of the season. Baker is in the playoffs for the 3rd straight year under head coach Steve Normand. The Hornets haven’t won a playoff game since 1984.

ST. PAUL’S (5-4) AT THEODORE (9-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, C.A. Douglas Field, Theodore

Last week: St. Paul’s defeated Baldwin County 28-14; Theodore defeated Saraland 27-26

Region standings: St. Paul’s is 5-2 in Class 6A, Region 1 and will be the fourth seed in the playoffs; Theodore is 9-0 and will be the top seed.

The skinny: The two teams have never played. … St. Paul’s coach Ham Barnett served as Theodore coach Eric Collier’s defensive coordinator before leaving to join Steve Mask’s staff at St. Paul’s. … The Saints have won three straight games since a 2-4 start in Barnett’s first season as head coach. In last week’s win over Baldwin County, UAB commit Christopher Bracy rushed for 100 yards and 3 TDs on 20 carries and Drew Williamson rushed for 161 yards and a TD on 26 carries. The game was tied 14-14 in the fourth quarter before the Saints pulled away. St. Paul’s has reached the playoffs 11 straight times and 18 of the last 19. … Theodore gained the top spot in the region with its home win over then-No. 1 Saraland last week. Brayden Jenkins rushed for 213 yards and 2 TDs on 38 carries in the victory. The Bobcats had the ball for 67 offensive snaps compared to 29 for Saraland. Miguel Frias gave Theodore the lead for good with a 25-yard field goal with 1:19 left in the game. Southern Miss commit Will James covered a Spartan fumble with 29 seconds left to seal the win. Eric Collier is 67-40 in his 10th year as Theodore’s head coach. His team has made the playoffs six straight years.

WILLIAMSON (6-3) AT UMS-WRIGHT (9-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Cooper Stadium, Mobile

Last week: Williamson was idle; UMS-Wright defeated Faith Academy 21-20

Region standings: Williamson is 4-3 in Class 5A, Region 1; UMS-Wright is 7-0

The skinny: UMS leads the series with Williamson 3-2. The teams last played in 2019 with the Bulldogs winning 14-0. … The Lions can make the playoffs as the fourth seed from the region with a win or a B.C. Rain loss to Gulf Shores on Thursday. The Lions have allowed 109 points this season – 77 of them came in losses to Gulf Shores (51-12) and Faith Academy (26-0). … UMS coach Terry Curtis can tie Buddy Anderson’s record for most victories all-time in state history with a win Friday night. Curtis is 345-92 in 34 years as a head coach, 24 of those at UMS. Anderson retired following the 2020 season after 43 years as head coach of the Rebels. He owns a 346-160 overall record. … South Alabama commit Cole Blaylock has rushed for 1,358 yards and 18 TDs on 178 carries. He also has 12 receptions for 182 yards and 3 TDs and has a kickoff and punt return touchdown. Joe Lott has rushed for 6 TDs, passed for 2 and has 5 interceptions on defense.

W.S. NEAL (6-3) AT T.R. MILLER (8-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Municipal Stadium, Brewton

Last week: W.S. Neal lost to Excel 27-14; T.R. Miller defeated St. Michael 35-6

Region standings: W.S. Neal finished 5-2 in Class 3A, Region 1 and is the third seed for the playoffs; T.R. Miller finished 7-0 in Class 4A, Region 1 and is the top seed

The skinny: T.R. Miller leads the annual “Battle of Murder Creek” 56-23. The game was first played in 1946, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society. The Tigers have won the last four games between the teams, including 40-16 a year ago. … W.S. Neal started the season 6-1, including a forfeit win over Mobile Christian. The Eagles have lost two straight games to Thomasville and Excel. Veteran Hugh Fountain is in the first year of his second stint as the team’s head coach. He went 40-29 from 1989-1995, leading the Eagles to the Class 4A semifinals in his final year. That was followed by a 16-year tenure at Charles Henderson and a decade (and 2 AISA state titles) at Escambia Academy. Fountain is 259-136 overall in 35 years as a head coach. The Eagles offense is led by Kevin Farrish (58 carries, 401 yards, 2 TDs), Laketric Barnes (374 yards rushing, 275 receiving, 300 kick return yards) and QB Carter Hodges (35-of-96 for 528 yards). Defensively, defensive linemen Jonathan Collins and Kameron Capterville have combined for 130 tackles. Farris has 55 tackles and 9 sacks and Quay McCants has 5 sacks. The defense has scored 4 touchdowns on fumble recoveries. … T.R. Miller’s only loss came in the second game of the season against Class 5A No. 1 UMS-Wright. The Tigers outscored their region opponents 283-65. Last week against St. Michael, Myles Johnson ran for 102 yards on just 9 carries. Takyi Askew covered a pair of fumbles for the Tigers. Brent Hubbert is 36-12 in four years as T.R. Miller’s head coach and 219-53 in 22 years overall.
