LSU’s Brian Kelly looks to consistency, cites Alabama, Georgia as examples

LSU is all about championships, Brian Kelly says.

With that said, the LSU football coach isn’t satisfied with the SEC West division title. In fact, while addressing the media gathered in Nashville for Day 1 of the SEC media days, Kelly made it a point that he has no interest in being a one-hit wonder.

Continuing the success of what he called “a very good first year,” Kelly is coming off A 10-win season in his debut in Baton Rouge. Now, he is looking for consistency.

“We have much to do,” he said Monday. “Progress needs to continue to be made in the best conference in all of college football. So, that will not be easy. We are excited about what we have done in a very short period of time. The foundation of success is built in consistency. Alabama and Georgia continue to hold that mantle of consistency in terms of playing for championships. That’s what we will be looking to be, playing for championships year in and year out. You don’t do it by being a one and done. You have to be able to do that over a period of time.”

Kelly, who finished 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the SEC last year, said there is a difference heading into Year 2 in Baton Rouge.

“In Year 1, I was learning the league,” he said. “I was learning how to go on the road and play in those kind of environments. I was learning the strengths and weaknesses of our roster.

“In going into Year 2, we have a lot of that knowledge. We understand a lot of those things necessary to be competitive and win games. Now, it’s how do you do it week in and week out. For us, that’s what we are focused on.”

Alabama and Georgia have combined to win eight of the last nine SEC Championship Games since 2014. The other winner was, of course, LSU in 2019.

When it comes to national championships, Georgia has won the last two, with Alabama taking three from 2015 to 2020.
