A man was fatally shot by police officers who responded Saturday night to a possible domestic hostage situation in Odenville.

Officers were dispatched at 7:16 p.m. to a 15705 Highway 411, said Odenville police Chief Glenn Walton.

When they arrived, they secured the home and learned a male suspect had entered a wooded area at behind the house.

Walton said officers encountered the suspect and victim and immediately attempted to deescalate the situation.

“The suspect was shot and is deceased,’’ Walton said. No additional details have yet been released.

Police officers from Odenville, Moody, Springville, Argo, Margaret and Leeds, as well as the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.

The investigation into the deadly shooting is headed by the Oxford Police Department and the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics.
