Alabama Roots: Top 10 in NFL receiving yards
Julio Jones’ pursuit of Terrell Owens for the record of the most NFL receiving yards by a player from an Alabama high school or college has slowed considerably in the past three seasons.
In his first nine NFL seasons, Jones averaged 1,347 receiving yards. In the past three, he has totaled 1,504, with injuries causing him to miss seven games in each season.
If Jones could have maintained his earlier average over the past three seasons, he would have passed Owens’ Alabama-roots record last season.
The two other active players among the top 10 players with Alabama football roots in NFL receiving yards didn’t slow down in 2022. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill set a franchise record with 1,710 receiving yards, and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper posted 1,160 yards, the second-highest of his six 1,000-yard seasons.
Hill jumped from ninth to fifth and Cooper moved from seventh to sixth on the Alabama-roots list.
Hill, Cooper, the Miami Dolphins’ Jaylen Waddle (Alabama) and the Philadelphia Eagles’ DeVonta Smth (Alabama) were 1,000-yard receivers in 2022, and the Denver Broncos’ Jerry Jeudy missed two games and missed by 28 yards.
