Auburn quarterback commit busy recruiting for Tigers

Walker White has been busy.

The consensus 4-star Auburn quarterback commit from Little Rock Christian Academy in Arkansas — the top-ranked quarterback in the state — has become one of the Tigers’ best recruiting assets since pledging to sign with Auburn in February.

“I’m doing a lot of recruiting,” White said during the Hustle Up 7on7 national competition at the Hoover Met Complex on Friday. “I’m just trying to be myself, just creating the relationship because if I’m authentic with them, then they’ll speak more words than me. I’m just trying to persuade them or give them a pitch.”

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound White has contacted an impressive list, extolling the virtues of the Tigers. It’s an eclectic list of offensive players White hopes to join him.

Receivers include Foley and Alabama commit Perry Thompson, Chilton County ATH and Georgia commit DeMarcus Riddick, Benjamin Russell’s Malcolm Simmons, Parkview (Ga.) ATH Mike Matthews and Colquitt County and Georgia commit Ny Carr. Lineman on his radar are Jameson Riggs of Hiram, Ga., DeAndre Carter of Mater Dei (Cal.), Hawaii’s Preston Taumua and Madison Academy’s Reese Baker.

“I’m just trying let them in on who I am and who they’ll be playing with and who will be the quarterback of the future team,” White said. “I want to build those relationships and feed the vision that coach (Hugh) Freeze has fed us, which is a national championship. We believe that our class can get us there in these next few years.”

White had offers from almost 30 schools, including SEC teams Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, along with Clemson, Penn State, Oklahoma and more.

He chose Auburn because of the relationship with Freeze and his ability to develop with the Tigers. He was Freeze’s first 4-star commitment.

“One of the biggest things I was looking for in the recruiting process is who can develop me and coach Freeze and the staff he put together, I’ve just seen and I know their history,” White said. “I know where they’ve been. I know that they’ve won everywhere they go and I know they were telling me all the things that they would teach me and the things mechanically and defensively and just their system. And then I just picture myself learning under them and I just knew that if I were to go to Auburn, I knew I would be developed so much.

“I know that I’ll become so much better as a player and as a person because I know coach Freeze and I believe him when he said I’ll stay close to the flame and the flame was talking about is the Lord. That was the biggest thing that really hit me, first the development and that I would also be around like-minded people.”

With Auburn’s Big Cat weekend scheduled for July 29, White is increasing his efforts.

“There are going to be a lot of highly-rated recruits that I really want and that Auburn as a staff really wants,” White said. “I think I’m pretty confident about a couple of those guys and hopefully we can walk away with a couple of commits. I know some of those guys. Their timelines are a little bit later into the season so we’re just going to stay on them, but I do feel very confident with some of the guys that we’re wanting.”
