Hurricane forecasters will watch Caribbean this week

The tropical Atlantic has been relatively quiet lately, but could that change later this week.

The National Hurricane Center will be tracking several areas of disturbed weather over the next few days, and one of them will be in the Caribbean.

The hurricane center said an area of low pressure is expected to form in the eastern Caribbean by this weekend. Conditions are expected to be favorable for it to develop, and it is expected to drift to the west or to the west-northwest over the weekend.

There is only a 20 percent probability of the system to become a tropical depression in the next five days.

It’s too soon to say if it could affect the U.S., but Caribbean systems are typically watched closely by those along the Gulf Coast.

It could be in a region that has seen its fair share of tropical systems at this point in the season. Here’s where past storms have developed in the Oct. 21-31 time frame and their tracks:

The hurricane center was also watching two other areas for possible development as of Tuesday.

The first, in the northwestern Atlantic, had a high chance of development on Monday but has since looked less organized.

The hurricane center said conditions are less favorable for it to develop, and forecasters dropped the probability of it becoming a tropical depression from 70 percent (high) to 40 percent (medium) on Tuesday.

The system is expected to track north and toward cooler water and more unfavorable winds over the next few days.

It could bring some heavy rain and gusty winds to Bermuda this morning.

The third spot to watch was in the southwestern Atlantic on Tuesday.

The hurricane center said an area of low pressure is expected to form between Puerto Rico and Bermuda in a few days. After that there’s a chance it could develop into subtropical system while it meanders over the southwestern Atlantic through the weekend.

It has a 30 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next five days.

The Atlantic hurricane season typically begins to slow down this time of year, but it officially lasts until Nov. 30.

So far this year there have been 11 named storms and five hurricanes.
