Decomposed remains found in cargo van in Birmingham identified as missing North Carolina man

A man found dead and decomposed in the back of a cargo van in Birmingham has been identified as a 35-year-old reported missing more than a month ago.

The body of Corey Volter was discovered at 7:44 a.m. Friday, July 7, in the 2200 block of Third Avenue South.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office Thursday confirmed to be the remains to be those of Volter, who was identified through the serial number on orthopedic hardware from a previous surgery.

Volter lived in Greensboro, N.C. He was last known to be making a deliver in Pinson on June 8, driving a white 2017 Chevrolet 3500 cargo van.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Volter was not heard from or seen after June 8, and his family in Louisiana filed a missing person report the following day.

On Friday morning, one month after he disappeared, Birmingham police were called to Third Avenue South after a nearby auto repair employee went to investigate the van, which had been parked there for some time. The person noticed something amiss and summoned authorities.

Volter was found in the cargo area of the van. The remains were taken to the coroner’s office.

Yates said the remains were in extremely poor condition, but an autopsy showed no signs of trauma. The cause of death is pending additional laboratory testing.
