Jimmy O’Neal Spencer, accused of killing 3, weeps during taped confession in court

A man accused of brutally murdering three people – including a seven-year-old child – showed tears in court as his taped confession was played for jurors Monday.

Jimmy O’Neal Spencer, 55, is accused of the July 13, 2018 deaths of Martha Dell Reliford, 65, Marie Kitchens Martin, 74, and Martin’s great-grandson, Colton Ryan Lee, 7.

Testimony continued this morning in the trial in Guntersville.

On Monday, prosecutors played a two-hour tape where Spencer confessed to the crimes, saying he killed the three people for money. WHNT reported that Spencer said he and his girlfriend were homeless, stealing to have something to eat.

“If I could’ve got the money any other kind of way I would’ve did it,” Spencer said.

Prosecutors say Spencer went to Reliford’s house with a hatchet to get money, killed her and made off with $600. On the tape, he said when he realized Reliford could report him to the police, he made the decision to kill her, WAFF reported.

After that money was spent, Spencer went to Martin’s house, killed the woman and child, and took $13. According to WAAY, Spencer claimed he didn’t know Colton Lee was in the house when he attacked Martin. He killed the child after realizing Lee had witnessed the murder.

“I know I did wrong. Wish I could change it,” Spencer said on the tape.

As the words were played, Spencer was seen crying, as was one member of the jury.
