Alabama Dems set town hall meetings to discuss redistricting

Alabama Democrats will be holding a series of town hall meetings across the state over the next week to discuss and answer questions about the state legislature’s redrawing of congressional districts.

The U.S. Supreme Court last month ruled that Alabama must create a second congressional district that is populated with a majority of minorities. The legislature will meet in a special session beginning July 17 to address the reconfiguring of Alabama’s seven congressional districts to comply with the court’s ruling.

The Supreme Court determined that Alabama’s districts – redrawn following the 2020 census – likely violated the Voting Rights Act. The court heard oral arguments in the case in October 2022.

Redrawing the congressional maps figures to put a Republican incumbent in a majority minority district and jeopardize his reelection next year or place two incumbents in the same district. Proposed maps submitted so far would appear to most impact District 1 Congressman Jerry Carl of Mobile and District 2 Congressman Barry Moore of Enterprise.
