Alvin Kamara settles criminal, civil cases
Facing a felony charge, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has instead pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor and apologized to the man injured in an incident in Las Vegas last year.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department took Kamara into custody shortly after he played in the NFL’s Pro Bowl on Feb. 6, 2022. Kamara was booked into the Clark County (Nevada) Detention Center for battery resulting in substantial bodily harm.
But the case is over for the five-time Pro Bowler 20 days before he was supposed to go to trial. Kamara pleaded no contest to breach of peace and agreed to complete 30 hours of community service, pay a $500 fine and provide $105,196.17 in restitution for medical expenses, according to Nevada’s Eighth Judicial District Court records.
Kamara also faced a $10 million civil lawsuit in connection with the incident, but Darnell Greene Jr.’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, announced on Instagram on Tuesday that “this matter has settled on confidential terms.”
Buzbee posted a note signed by Kamara to his client that read: “Please accept my sincere apologies for the events of February 5, 2022, in Las Vegas. I am happy that we were able to get on the other side of this unfortunate incident and wish you the best for the future.”
While avoiding further punishment by the court, Kamara still could be subject to disciplinary action by the NFL under its Personal Conduct Policy.
An LVMPD release stated patrol officers went to a local hospital at around 5:50 p.m. PST Feb. 5, 2022, to talk to a person who reported being the victim of a battery at the Cromwell Las Vegas Hotel and Casino as he was leaving an elevator.
“The investigation by LVMPD detectives determined the victim was battered by the suspect, later identified as Alvin Kamara,” the police release read. “He was located and taken into custody without incident on Feb. 6, 2022.”
Chris Lammons, a cornerback who played for the Kansas City Chiefs last season, and two other men were charged in the incident.
On March 2, Kamara pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit battery and substantial bodily harm. His trail date had been set for July 31.
Kamara has been a Pro Bowl selection in five of his six seasons with the Saints. He entered the NFL as a third-round draft choice from Tennessee, where he played two seasons after a redshirt season at Alabama and one season at Hutchinson Community College.
