Meet the fan obsessed with documenting the history of Auburn’s athletic uniforms

When Auburn alum Clint Richardson returned home to Huntsville for summer break in 2013, he turned his attention to summer project — not one assigned by a professor, but one assigned by his own curiosity.

Familiar with the likes of UniWatch.com and other sport uniform-centric websites, Richardson set out to replicate the idea, but focus on Auburn’s men’s basketball team.

“There was a time that was like, I have no idea what the Auburn basketball team wore,” Richardson said. “So the website actually started as the Auburn basketball uniform database.”

That was 10 years ago.

Since then, Richardson and AuburnUniforms.com has not only documented Auburn basketball’s uniforms, including the “dark age” of the late 90s and early 2000s, but has expanded to everything from football uniforms to gymnastics leotards.

Like many Auburn fans, Richardson has an affinity for the look of Auburn football’s uniforms from the early- to mid-1980s — especially if the No. 34 was affixed to it.

“There’s just something different about the 80s cut of the jersey and just watching that 34 run,” Richardson said. “Bo knew how to make a uniform look good and he wore that design so well.”

While the likelihood of Auburn football bringing back the baggy jerseys from the 80s is slim to none, the Tigers did sport orange facemasks in 2021 against Ole Miss in an ode to the Pat Dye era and Richardson was sure to secure a replica.

Alongside his replica helmets, Richardson also owns a 100-item collection of team-issued gear, including jerseys, pants and warmups.

“It’s been a guilty pleasure, for sure,” says Richardson.

As Richardson celebrates the 10th anniversary of his summer project, there’s a sense of gratitude.

“I know we’re not a small business, but small businesses don’t usually last after five years,” Richardson said. “Websites probably have a much shorter tenure. So for this thing to have lasted a decade and to have seen the growth that is has… I’ve got over 250 combined seasons of Auburn uniforms documented. It’s something I’m really proud of.”
