Alabama Roots: Top 10 in NFL kickoff-return yards

Alabama Roots: Top 10 in NFL kickoff-return yards

The NFL adopted another rule this offseason involving kickoffs that likely will further reduce the number of runbacks. In 2023, a fair catch on the kickoff will result in the football being spotted at the receiving team’s 25-yard line.

The reduction in the number of kickoff returns in the NFL already has been sharp in reaction to rule changes. In 2010, the average NFL team had 63.5 kickoff returns and 1,419.4 kickoff-return yards. In 2022, the average NFL team returned 29.7 kickoffs for 722 yards.

Despite the diminishing returns, two of the seven players from Alabama high schools and colleges who have the most career kickoff-return yards are playing in the NFL now – No. 3 Ameer Abdullah and No. 7 Tremon Smith.

While Alabama has produced players who are near the top in NFL history in several major statistical categories, kickoff-return yards is not one of the state’s strong suits. Speedy Duncan, the state’s leader, was an all-star returner, but his kickoff-return yardage ranks 49th on the league’s all-time list.

In 2022, former Alabama running back Jerome Ford finished third in the NFL with 723 kickoff-return yards on 30 returns.

The best kickoff-return average for players with Alabama roots who have had at least 75 returns (the minimum standard for the NFL record book) belongs to Leodis McKelvin at 26.0 yards.
