Florence pitcher first Alabama-roots pick in MLB draft
The Chicago White Sox selected LSU pitcher Grant Taylor with the 51st choice in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Sunday night in Seattle.
Taken in the second round, Taylor became the first player from an Alabama high school or college selected in this year’s draft.
Taylor was the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 7A Player of the Year for Florence High School in 2021, when he posted a 7-0 record with a 2.25 earned-run average and 127 strikeouts in 64.2 innings.
The White Sox chose Taylor even though he missed the 2023 season because of an elbow injury.
In his freshman season with LSU, the right-hander had a 4-1 record with a 5.81 ERA in 17 games. He had 39 strikeouts in 31 innings in 2022.

Taylor was the fourth player picked from LSU on Sunday night.
The Pittsburgh Pirates opened the draft by picking LSU pitcher Paul Skenes after he set a SEC single-season record in 2023 with 209 strikeouts. The No. 2 pick came from LSU, too, as the Washington Nationals chose outfielder Dylan Crews. The Cincinnati Reds took LSU pitcher Ty Floyd at No. 38.
At No. 51, Taylor was the latest first pick with Alabama baseball roots since 2015, when Mikey White, a shortstop from Spain Park High School and Alabama, was taken with the 63rd choice by the Oakland Athletics.
