Woman found shot to death at East Lake Park tennis courts
A woman was found slain Friday morning at East Lake Park’s tennis courts.
A passerby made the discovery about 7:15 a.m. in the 400 block of 82nd Street North, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, was found under the overhang of the tennis courts clubhouse at Lynn Park, which is part of East Lake Park. Fitzgerald said she had been shot.

It wasn’t immediately clear when the fatal shooting took place. The only Shot Spotter call in that area was almost 24 hours earlier, and Fitzgerald said it’s unlikely the victim had been there that long without being spotted.
Detectives will canvass the area to see if neighbors heard or saw anything.
The woman is Birmingham’s 68th homicide this year. Of those, six have been ruled justified and therefore aren’t deemed criminal. Another was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 100 homicides countywide this year, including the 68 in Birmingham.
At this time last year, there had been 91 homicides countywide and 68 in Birmingham.

An editing error was corrected at 10 a.m. It is unlikely the victim was killed a day before the body was found.
