Brandon Miller: More fouls than points in second outing

Brandon Miller: More fouls than points in second outing

After the pro debut of former Alabama All-American Brandon Miller on Monday night, Marlon Garnett, the coach of the Charlotte Hornets’ summer team, said he wanted “to see that motor come out of him a little bit, a little bit more aggressive.”

But in his second exhibition game in the California Classic on Wednesday night, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft took four shots and got to the free-throw line once. However, Miller’s stat line in a 98-83 loss to the Golden State Warriors also included a team-high seven assists.

“Brandon is playing the right way,” Garnett said. “He’s one of the guys that’s a ball mover for us. He’s just making the right play. He’s not forcing the issue.”

Miller also had six points, four rebounds, one steal, four turnovers and eight fouls in 28:08 of court time against the Warriors in Sacramento, California. (Under California Classic rules, a player needs 10 fouls to be disqualified. Wednesday night’s 40-minute game featured 49 personal fouls.)

Miller made 1-of-2 3-point shots on Wednesday night, while his teammates went 2-of-18 from beyond the arc.

Miller made both his baskets in the fourth quarter. After two summer games, Miller is 6-of-6 from the floor, including four 3-point buckets, in the fourth quarter.

On Monday night in the Hornets’ 98-77 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Miller finished with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal, one blocked shot, six turnovers and seven fouls.

The California Classic was a six-team, two-day session hosted by the Sacramento Kings as a warmup for the NBA 2K24 Summer League, which includes all 30 of the league’s teams and starts on Friday in Las Vegas.

The Hornets tip off their four scheduled games in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. CDT Friday against the Spurs. Charlotte also has games against the Los Angeles Lakers at 3 p.m. Sunday, the Portland Trail Blazers at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and New Orleans Pelicans at 6:30 p.m. July 13 on its NBA 2K24 Summer League schedule.

The Spurs had the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, and Victor Wembanyama is expected to make his pro debut on Friday night against the Hornets. Portland had the No. 3 pick, taking Scoot Henderson after Charlotte chose Miller.
