Will mail run on July 4th? Is the post office open?

July 4th has become one of the biggest holidays on the yearly calendar, a summer celebration marked with parties, parades and fireworks.

July 4th marks the day the Founding Fathers adopted the Declaration of Independence, signaling a break from Great Britain. While the day has been celebrated since that original signing in 1776, patriotic celebrations became more widespread after the War of 1812 when the U.S. again defeated the British.

According to History.com, Congress made July 4th a federal holiday in 1870. In 1941, it was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal workers.

As a federal and state holiday, government offices are closed on July 4th. Essential services like trash collection and public transportation typically run on a different schedule.

The U.S. Post Office is closed on July 4th and there will be no mail service. Post offices will reopen, and mail service will resume on Wednesday, July 5th.

There have already been five postal holidays this year: New Year’s Day (Jan. 2); Martin Luther King Jr. birthday (Jan. 16); President’s Day (Feb. 20); Memorial Day (May 29); and Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19).

Here are the remaining mail holidays:

  • Independence Day – Tuesday, July 4
  • Labor Day – Monday, Sept. 4
  • Columbus Day – Monday, Oct. 9
  • Veterans Day – Saturday, Nov. 11 (Friday treated as a holiday)
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, Nov. 23
  • Christmas Day – Monday, Dec. 25
